After the technicalities had been sorted out, Maximian and Diocletian adopted their sons-in-law to be next in line for the thrones. This created what was called the tetrarchy.

Diocletian: "You will be given some power, as Caesars*." * junior emperors

Maximian: "But not too much."

Over the years, Diocletian and his fellow rulers fought and guided many battles against the enemies of Rome.

Diocletian: "I'm getting pretty sick of this."

And though he was always victorious, Diocletian had never set foot in Rome, the capitol of the Roman empire, not even to show off the spoils of his conquests. The single time he went was to unveil some new baths.

Diocletian: "Fine! I'll go! Are you happy now?"

However, while in Rome, Diocletian fell seriously ill and nearly died. After than ordeal he came to an important decision. Diocletian: "I'm going to retire."

Advisors: "OH MY GODS!"
