Normally the emperor would rule until he died. However, Diocletian decided to voluntarily give up his throne to his heir. Diocletian: "Maximian, I am going to retire and you will do so as well." Maximian: "..." Diocletian: "okay?" Maximian: "..." Diocletian: "Okay?" Maximian: "......" Diocletian: "?"

Therefore, in the year 305, the two sons-in-law were peacefully declared the new rulers of the Roman empire.

And Diocletian became a regular citizen of Rome. Diocletian: "Have fun, good luck! They'll need it."

Well... Maximian: "What the hell is that?!?" Diocletian: "My house." Except for the palace. Many years later it was made into a city.
