It is the year 305 A.D., and a new regime has assumed the twin thrones of the Roman Empire.
In the Western half of Rome:
Senior Emperor Augustus Constantius Chlorus (The Pale)
Junior Emperor Caeser Flavius Valerius Severus
In the Eastern half of Rome:
Senior Emperor Augustus Galerius Maximianus
Junior Emperor Caeser Maximinus Daia (Galerius' nephew)
The two senior emperors didn't get along.
Galerius: "I'm not working with that [censored]"
Constantius: "Screw you!"
Constantius was both seriously ill (from leukemia) and continuously waging wars.
Constantius: "Hey, gotta make the most of my life."
Soldier: "Sir, please don't gesture with your sword."
Augustus Galerius had been able to place his ally, Severus, in the Western Caeser's seat, hoping that once Constantius died, he could seize the Western throne and rule all of Rome.
Galerius: "I have meager ambitions."
And what was Diocletian doing at this point?
Dicoletian: "Cabbage farming."
