Constantine and his army traversed the alps in 312 a.d. and marched for Rome, conquering Turin and Verona along the way.

Constantine: Whee!

Maxentius' grip on Rome was slipping, and he was far from prepared for the challenge.

This was due to several unfortunate events, beginning with Lucius, one of Maxentius' prefects in Africa, rebelling. He claimed to be the true emperor in Maxentius' stead, and cut off Rome's supply of grain.

Lucius: No grain for you.

Maxentius: Nooooo...

The starving citizens began to riot. Maxentius chose to deal with this situation by killing dissenters left and right.

Maxentius: Yeah! Who else wants some?!

So, to pair them off:

Maxentius! Larger army than Constantine but little public support.

And:

Constantine! Smaller army but already has some successes in his pocket.

Constantine: Woo!
