The Battle of the Milvian Bridge
Before the battle, Maxentius consulted with soothsayers to ensure the omens were good, as was the usual practice.
Soothsayer: I see the Gods will smile upon you! So you don't have to use any of your usual... Bribing tactics.
Maxentius: Great!
Constantine, on the other hand, according to a Christian author named Lactantius, had a religious experience.
Bishop: ...and put a Khi Rho cross on your men's shields, it'll show the Christians that you are fighting under our Lord's name. In hoc signo vinces.*
Constantine: O.K.
*Under this sign you will win.
Constantine: Woah hey guys! I had this amzing dream where some god told me to put this weird symbol on our shields and we will win for sure!
Legionaries: Woo, alright! Our emperor rules! What is this symbol, anyway?
Constantine: No idea.
Legionaries: Must be some kind of war god thing.
