Okay, it’s not certain how exactly the pontoon collapsed. But the fact remains that it did. Sucks to be Maxentius.
And uh, looking back, I think the previous two pages posted on Monday and Wednesday. For no apparent reason other than I hate the 12 month calendar. Luckily, there were no casualties this time but I’ll be careful in the furture and check the dates.
The battle was turning against Maxentius and his army. In a panic, the troops fled towards the Tiber river.
Legionary 1: Ok, here come our guys. Looks like about half of the army.
Legionary 2: Yeah, and... OH GODS! Constantine's army is coming!
Legionary 1: OH GODS!
Various cries of: Waah! Mommy! Gods! Nooo! Help! Gyaa! I can't swim!
Legionary 1 & 2: ......

Yeah. For that battle what happened is that he sent a small group of men over the bridge to tempt Constantine. There was a fight and they retreated in good order. Constantine deigned to pursue. The Max got on the bridge and started yelling at Constantine. He yelled, screamed jumped up and down and the jostling loosened the pin where he drowned too death. The whole idea of the plan was to remove the pin when Constantine was crossing the bridge but it sorta backfired.
Oh my gods that is even more awesome. Thanks for the tip, Pedant! I’m surmising that this story came from one of Constantine’s historians of the time – it’s very detailed! Can you tell me, what are your sources? I’d love to expand mine.
Now that is graphic storytelling at its best! I’m getting stoked to see the battle, I turn the page and it’s a segment of a commemorative monument depicting the event. Just the type of cleverness that gets me going. Definitely funny but also recognizing in a way that it’s within the context of these ancient civilizations themselves that the art of pictorial storytelling is first perfected.
When you started writing this did you factor in how many nerds would be reading?
Yay! I’m so glad it worked exactly like I intended it! It’s so nice when that happens.
Yes, I did indeed. Counted on it.
